Bible Term: Sadducee

The Sadducees were a Jewish sect that did not believe in the resurrection (Acts 23:8). They were often in opposition to the more prevalent Pharisees; both were often criticized by Jesus (Matthew 16:6).

(A humorous and clever childhood memory aid is that the Sadducee did not believe in resurrection, that is why they were “sad, you see.”)

Compare to Pharisee.

Key verse about Sadducee: The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven (Matthew 16:1, NIV).

A lifelong student of the Bible, Peter DeHaan, PhD, wrote the 1,000-page website ABibleADay.com to encourage people to explore the Bible. His main blog and many books urge Christians to push past the status quo and reconsider how they practice their faith in every area of their lives.
